An Online Class Is Coming!!!

A real quick overview for Building a Painted Scene.

I am teaching with acrylic paints and mediums how to Build a Scene of Nature.

Learning how to use the pigments with the intended medium to engage your painted story more vibrantly.  To use the brush as an extension of your arm and realize how NOT DIFFICULT painting really is.

We begin with practicing elements of nature, in this series we work with trees, grass and rocks.
(Other series planned will include water, sky and so forth)

After the practice paintings of the elements involved trees, grass and rocks the final painting will include pulling all those elements from different sources to build a scene that may or may not be an actual setting in your neighborhood but, sure could be.

Included in the class are videos with instructional how to, perfect for anyone beginning or wanting to expand their range.  I like to take classes for the practice involved of having a preplanned project laid forth that provides me a ready project so, perfect for the experienced too!
PDF's for studying.

Lists of materials and sources.

Offering group camaraderie with a Facebook private group, where we share our projects and questions that need me to answer or the ability to e-mail me with questions.
For those who want to add the benefit of one on one instruction, I will offer a limited number of spaces for meeting over the inter net live with helpful instruction and feedback.

E-mail me at mshemeral@midstatesd.net to be placed on the list for further information as it becomes available.

The class is set to launch in August 2015!!!

Come join us learning how easy painting really is!

A special THANK YOU to Anne Gaal,Ph.D.,CPCC,ACC at http://annegaal.com
who kept encouraging me and helped me through ALL the electronically challenging parts to bring this to the on-line community.

Go to the Stagecoach Gallery on Facebook  www.facebook.com/StagecoachGallery and sign onto the list for information as well as email me direct: mshemeral@midstatesd.net
Go to www.maryshuntstudio.com if you want to view my range.

Thank you for stopping in today :) Have a great Fourth of July weekend!

An Overview of the Retreat...Finally!

The retreat was amazing!
For the first time I think the turnout was great!
And it cooled off enough to make the weather bearable for some outside assignments.

Everyone is arriving and meeting each other getting acquainted time.
They came from Houston Texas, Virginia, Wyoming and Local Gentry!

Then next couple of days was BUSY.  The classes packed a LOT of information into the space of time.

Chris is giving her instruction for Pastel Painting.

Their results from the class!!!

The Photography class took advantage of rolling in weather and went on location.

Back in the classroom Chad is going over what to do with their images.

Glass Staining corner.  On the palette she learned to make the lump for using in matting.  Typically, I use a different elixir for lines and that is also on the palette.  One of the tiles being worked up.

Ready to fire in the Kiln.

These are all the pictures I have off the camera.  From my phone, which I don't know how to transfer to the computer, are images we learned to do with Instagram.  Those hashtags are:
#sdartists  # sdart  #stagecoachgallery

I did not have any pictures of the watercolor class on the camera but, they are in the instagram # group on the stagecoach page on facebook.

www.facebook.com/stagecoachgallery

Their feedback indicates they had a good time, learned a lot, and want to come again next year.

Thank you all the participants, and a special thank you to the teachers:

Chad Phillips ~ www.chadphillipsphotography.com
Chris Cernetisch ~ www.pastelchris.com
Bonnie Brahms ~ www.brahms-art.us.net
Mary Hunt ~ www.maryshuntstudio.com

We will be having one day workshops throughout the rest of the year until it is time again for the next retreat.

Slated for the 3rd weekend of June 2015.

I appreciate everyone following along and sharing the posts as we were getting the word out.
Thank you!

No Matter What Your Age

By Chris Cernetisch
Pastel
"No matter what your age or your path, weather making art is your career or your hobby or your dream, it is not too late or too egotistical or too selfish or too silly to work on your creativity" (quote from Julie Cameron)

I have been attending workshops/class/revivals/retreats over 40 years!

I ALWAYS benefit in the experience!.

Even when attending a workshop where "my qualifications" are 'higher' than the instructors!

Going to weekend workshop retreats are so inspiring and the enthusiasm is SO contagious, you are MOTIVATED to learn.

You do not NEED to be an "artist" ALL you need is a desire to come and learn something new.

The rest is going to happen.

Learning the process in a 3 FULL day set up, jump starts you past all the scary, icky frustrating parts.
Setting your goals towards success for learning the techniques involved.

You learn age old processes, twisted with the instructors own blend and take, enabling YOU to learn through "their" mistakes, gaining you success faster.

The beauty of a weekend workshop is one, that you attend a course in 3 days instead of 6 weeks.
It is the same thing.
  • Except, you have a smoother transition of class content.
  • Better ability to retain what you are learning.
  • Fewer stops and restarts, for keeping the processes flowing.
  • Ramping UP your ability to learn the process
Keeping the classes small enables each participant.
  • A One on One experience
  • camaraderie spirit
"No matter what your age or your path, weather making art is your career or your hobby or your dream, it is not too late or too egotistical or too selfish or too silly to work on your creativity"

There is a Deadline...

I am not good with removing glare...
This is Bonnie Brahms Watercolor
She is instructing the watercolor workshop

The Workshop Retreat the Stagecoach Gallery is hosting in Platte, SD July 25,26,27 with The opening EVENT on July 24th, has decided on its DEADLINE  for signing up for this amazing experience!

JUNE 21 2014
deadline

Remember  there are ONLY 8 students per each instructor.  You choose from 4 established artisans of 4 different fields.
 CHOOSE ONE OF~

Photography, Pastel Painting, Watercolor Painting, Painting on Glass

Chad Phillips~ www.chadphillipsphotography.com ~ is giving instruction and assistance to 8 individuals who wish to learn their method (camera) for capturing pictures.  Your camera phone, your point and shoot, or that fancy camera,  they all have so many apps and dials... (be it digital or film!)
all of these methods of picture taking will do the job but, don't you want to learn how to capture those photos to make the most memorable documentations of your lives that is possible.
Learn to step outside your comfort zone and embrace photography in whole different way.
You bring YOUR camera.
NO EXPERIENCE necessary~ 3 FULL days~$375

Chris Cernetisch~ www.pastelchris.com ~ is giving the workshop for 8 individuals who want to learn more from their exploration of a most tricky medium or who have never tried pastels but have a desire to.  She takes the guess work out of the equation and helps to guide you through the process to gain you better success.  This is a mysterious medium and when done properly affords the individual with such rewards.
There will be a list of materials for you to supply yourself with and bring to class
NO EXPERIENCE necessary~ 3FULL days ~$375

Bonnie Brahms ~ www.brahms-art.us  ~ is giving a workshop for 8 individuals looking forward to working with water, color, and paper.  She is going to move you through this process taking all the wonder away to give you a successful exploration of the medium.
There will be a list of materials to supply yourself with to bring to class.
NO EXPERIENCE necessary~ 3 FULL days~ $375

Mary Hunt~ www.maryshuntstudio.com ~ is giving a workshop for 8 individuals who like to learn new processes and enjoy learning about a lost and dying art.
Also, for the individual who already likes to work with glass who wants to expand their learning.
This is a Traditional Method that dates to the Egyptian Era.
There are not many places in the USA where you can learn this process.
Most of them IF you can find a place, are on the West or East coast.  At a MUCH HIGHER fee!
At one time Mary was one of a handful, (like 10) qualified to be sought after for staining glass in this method.  Collected by Museums and has several panels of work in many churches throughout the country.
Learning this process will open you up and enlighten your senses.  Even if you do not work in glass, or do not intend to ~this class will help immensely with Value.
The project you finish, if you can not finish it on your own and do not want to learn how to, Mary can finish it out for you, into a box or a panel.
ALL the materials and kiln firings are provided in the fee.~ 3 FULL days $435

A thought for the frugal~ this comprehensive FULL workshop would cost a LOT more if tutored, or taking the class for 6 weeks.
In my experience, a workshop like this a person will learn the most because it flows all the way through, not stopping to get picked up again next time, retaining MORE!

ALL the lessons learned in ANY of the 4 classes will help in any art area.  Learn a NEW process.
If you work in say oils already~ take a pastel~class and become recharged and inspired.
You either found another way to express yourself, or what you learn in this class might help you in the oils.  All mediums feed off each other!

Are you "looking" for way to bring clarity to your day, or help to bring you a hobby, EXPLORE!!! take a class!!!!

So, make your decision on which class and contact Mary to sign up!
DO NOT keep putting this off, as it seems to be in peoples nature to do.

This opportunity is rare, and in many of your own back yards.
How easy to attend this class living in the state or the area...I have 2 people coming from VA! to take advantage of this amazing offering.

I keep hearing "we WANT classes",  We want to KNOW a set time for class, these are the classes that are most requested! DO YOU REEEAAALLLYYYY want them?

thank you

The Watercolor Workshop~ An Interview Question for Bonnie

Watercolor Workshop
July 25, 26, 27 2014
Bonnie Brahms

Bonnie is asked the same question:  Why should a person decide to take a watercolor class from you?

Bonnie's answer:

Because during the workshop I plan to springboard new ideas to go deeper and find your own artistic voice with watercolor.

First you ask yourself what would I like to say?

I can help you communicate those ideas with shapes, line, repetition, and values.

There will be small exercises that will jump-start your creative side as well as help with learning how easy it is to sketch and put down what you see, expanding your abilities of observance and interpretation.

By giving you the tools, information and inspiration, new doors open and with those discoveries bring confidence and excitement to your painting experience. Bonnie Brahms

Bonnie plans to discuss materials and tools used with watercolor.  The paper (this discussion alone will clear up a ton of mystery!) paint qualities (they are vast!)

A must for the beginner.
The advanced student will greatly benefit from this discussion as well.
The information will help clear up questions and may entice you to learn more about the product because you are going to see what it is good for.

Learn to stretch paper!!!  Did you know that paper is stretched?  Of course canvas is stretched, well so is paper!...like anything though there is a right process.

Make a color chart...this practice is a corner stone working in watercolor.
Every hue is mixed.  The chart keeps the painting accurate throughout the execution.

Learning value is another indispensable practice!

The different studies that will proceed through the workshop will bring to the individual a better understanding of value, gray scale, introduction of color, blending how to keep areas dry and how to not mud the wet...

All these techniques are important to watercolor...they also cross to acrylic and somewhat to oil...the lessons will become a value that follows you in many directions.

Come on and join in the workshop...don't miss an opportunity like this they are few of this magnitude!

THREE days of being with an accomplished artist to pick her brain, hone your skills, and learn a new love ...passion is a painter!

Come on and join in...you know you want to.

The Photography Workshop ~An Interview Question

Photography Workshop
Chad Phillips
July 25, 26, 27 2014
Stagecoach Retreat
Platte, SD
3 Days

Mary:  Why would I want to take YOUR class Chad?

Chads answer:

Because I am going to force you to step out of our box.

You are going to learn how to open up and really use your camera for how it was designed.

Too often we jump out of the car, shoot a photo and leave.
I am going to help you open your mind's eye to visualize an image.
Not just what's in front of you, but how the image will look when you are done with it.

Something may catch your eye, but you don't feel it.
I will help you to learn how to make that connection with the landscape.

In the true art of photography there is so much more than just snapping a photo.

You will learn how to create images that you will be proud of.
Not make excuses for.

You will learn how to open your senses.
Is it hot, Where is the sun, is the wind blowing.

All of that needs to be translated into the actual photo.

Much like taking a painters thought process and applying it into creating photographic art. Taking the actual photo is only the start.

Next we will learn how to correctly adjust the image in Adobe Lightroom.
How to get true color balance and adjust for the effect you want.

Then we will take it into Photoshop to correct any issues and play a bit with HDR.

We will not be creating or photoshoping images to look cute or fun. No trends here.

We will focus on creating images that can be viewed and cherrished 100 years from now.

We won't be learning how to copy someone elses work.
We will be learning how to create images that are inspired from within ourselves.

Everyone is unique. So should the images.

Much of what will be learned can be applied to other forms of art as well.

A great example is my Brookside school photo under the stars. People can see and feel the emotion I did creating the image.
That was one of my absolute favorite times photographing landscapes.
Out there under the stars, no light, no moon, no noise.

Only the coyotes in the distance. In that image you can see the passing low clouds.
I swear I could here them float by.

Photographic art needs to project emotion. Good, bad, happy or sad it needs to show emotion...

end answer...

And YOU have the opportunity to gain all these passionate insights...

Come and join us this weekend!!
You KNOW you want to!

As You Drive Up...The Retreat..

As I wait for Bonnie and Chad to finish getting me their outline for their classes.  I thought I would show you where the retreat July 25, 26, 27th is being held.

This is a beautiful place.  Imagine it lush and green and the grasses in the fields grown.  The trees green.  You need to look into the future, this picture is taken today in the middle of the winter!.

Come summer, the fields will have some growth from their planted crop.  You might gaze out and see the deer feeding, at the very least the pheasants.  There are wooded trails, a huge pond all kinds of features that will be perfect for sketching and painting.

The inside of the lodge is gorgeous.  By day the living space will hold a class, probably Chads photography class, since his medium is the least messy.
The other classes are located in one of the other 2 buildings.

A communal kitchen is available for use, but there will not be any served meals.  Town is but 3 miles away and there many delicious eating establishments and a full stocked grocery store.

8 bedrooms, sharing 2 beds and a bathroom, each room.  The first 16 people interested in staying AT the lodge must be willing to share the room, or pay double.  Additionally there are 2 hotels in town and several BandB's.  This information will be forthcoming.

In the evening plan to kick back and resonate the day with the fellow participants around the fire-pit.
You can bring along your favorite evening beverage and store them in the bar area just off the fire-pit.

Come fully prepared for a stimulating yet relaxing weekend surrounded by nature, comrades that will begin friendships, imparting wonderful skills and knowledge.

Speaking of Classes!

Pastel
Instructor: Chris Cernetisch
www.pastelchris.com
$135 per day or $375 all 3 days

Pastel is one of the 4 classes during the Art Retreat July 25, 26, 27th 2014.
Chris has provided me with a rough outline of her plans for her class.

Her plan is to provide 3 separate days of different approaches for this Pastel medium.
Take one day, two days, or combine everything and grasp a HUGE bang experience putting it all together for all 3 days.

Chris is a powerful instructor, and a master of Pastel painting.

I have been given instruction from her and she doesn't 'simply instruct'  she imparts knowledge.  Years of trials and happy outcomes.
The products that are fabulous and the products to try at a later time.

I have had the pleasure to watch her paint.
Just watching her paint is so mesmerizing AND instructional!
The skill!! that oozes from her so easily.
Her confidence is infectious!
Watching her demonstrations alone, are forth coming with heaps of technical application.

She shares so much throughout the demonstrations.

As I list her given outline, do not read the list and think, well I am already good with that much...perhaps...perhaps not.

Know this, Chris covers a LOT of area and products...the one day alone will bring you forward in your Pastel studies, if not just remind you of the materials out there that you may have wanted to try, and concur that perhaps you might not waste the monies on that particular product just now...and move forward to something different on your list.
Again, covered in the class...day ONE!

We encourage you to consider this retreat if you have always wanted to try soft pastels but have no idea how to begin.
If you have dabbled with the soft Pastels but were disappointed.
To brush up on skills gone rusty.

This is the class and instructor for that!

Gaze upon the above picture... look at the MOVEMENT Chris achieves.  Though my photo can't begin to bring forth the depth engaged in her painting nor the colors that make the painting a frozen moment in time...look at how mighty the painting still comes through!

Chris is a powerhouse of a painter.
You can not help but come away from her class full of inspiration and excitement and want to run back to your place and engage in all the technical 'knowledge tools' Chris will provide you.

So, Look over this list and decide will I take 1, 2 or all 3 days.

Day 1- A thorough discussion of different brands of Pastels, papers and other tools and supplies, plus ways to apply the Pastel to paper.

Day 2- Learn how to choose the paper, lessons on color and value, using these ideas to create an under painting ready for a finished piece.
(the lessons for color and value transcend to every medium)

Day 3- Putting it all together!  We will work on a painting or 3! using the new skills.

There is a provided list of materials the student will be responsible to bring, available upon reservation.

A brochure is being written that covers tuition, lodging, and the lodge the retreat is being held.  For information, and to be placed on the mailing list.

Empty...

This morning I removed the Valentines Day decorations from the front window.
Now the glass is all empty.
I am not much into getting into placing EVERY kind of holiday up in those windows...
I am NOT about holidays anyway.

I am about expression.

Teaching others how to express themselves and perhaps learn to be creative.
Passing along the insights already expressed, with the abundance of wonderful artistic expression throughout the Gallery.

Or by giving them personal instruction through the many class offerings.

It is not about the holidays but more about personal growth.

Sometimes I wish I had gone with my original plan to name the place "Stuff".
I think that titling the place with "Gallery" scares the people.
They think everything in here is off limits expensive.
BUT
When they FINALLY do come through that door, they discover how affordable these artists have kept their prices.
Because...they realize this isn't New York City.
An actual comment...
"I tried and tried to NOT come in here...(sigh)....because I KNEW, I was going to LOVE this place..."

For One OF A Kind works,
not a replica that has most likely been ripped off from the originating source,
that then needs to be framed...

but finished, framed, and not a copy, not the same as the place around the corner, not a fad... an individual, personal, resonating that the creator helps to bring forth.

A unique YOU individual form of expression.

So the window is going to remain empty of holiday types of "advertising"...but stay FULL of the priceless fantabulous works from the originators, who are still alive!!! and hence, affordable.

Periodically, IF I am in the mood, I may 'decorate' the windows with some kind of message...maybe.

So come on by the Stagecoach Gallery...where dreams are wild..in the west.

I want to thank all the Artists who keep sending their amazing work.
And the people who recognize them and adopt their pieces to go to their new "forever" homes.
And continue to want to learn...

Thank you for allowing me to ramble this morning :)

Journaling Practices

I journal, journal journal! Make the journal booklets, sometimes...buy them ready made...yes ...but the main goal is to enter stuff into the journal.

I am participating in a group  this year, Documented Life Project.  Headed up by a talented group of women, 5 of them, I will list 1...Roben-Marie Smith and you can read about the information on her blog through www.robenmarie.com

We take a journal, or in my case I took an agenda/journal and I use it to incorporate scheduled practices as well as the prompts offered within the group but, I found I really like to add everyday things to the pages and that tells me and anyone looking through the book, what has been happening.

I found out right away I do a LOT more than I realized and I go places a lot more than I thought.

I used a Moleskine agenda book.  Already it had the calendar.  The pages are bit thinner than I like so I prepared pages before I used them, that helped prevent bleeding through and the like.

Here are a few spreads:

Another journal group I belong to is helping me grow personally.  "One Little Word 2014" by Ali Edwards.

I don't have pictures to offer, but she helps us to learn through one word...more.  I chose "Listen"
I am late to joining this group so I am still working on month 1 while everyone else is in month 2.
If you are interested in learning more about her and the group go to:
www.aliedwards.com

I also practice sketch and painting and techniques in other journals, so I keep a  lot of journals going.  A girl can't have toooo many!

Pick up a journal today and either just write, dump the day, do a little doodle...experience the freeing of the spirit.

Have a terrific Day!
