2018 Season BEGINS!

 

I have been placing out new work all over the Gallery!

 

It has taken me a week to get all the pieces in place and dust and make ready for the new season!!

 

We are beginning the new season!

It is 2018!

There is a LOT planned!

 

Our first event is April 14 and begins at 11 am.  Brenda DeHaan will visit and bring with her crystals and gems and talk about their powerful connection.  Join us in a warm welcome, please stop by and look at all the new she alone is offering!

And take in what all our artists are presenting.  Our lovely work has fabulous price points already, with a few additional incentives.  THIS day ONLY!

There will be a list of materials for you to supply yourself with and bring to class

Bonnie Brahms ~ www.brahms-art.us  ~ is giving a workshop for 8 individuals looking forward to working with water, color, and paper.  She is going to move you through this process taking all the wonder away to give you a successful exploration of the medium.

Mary Hunt~ www.maryshuntstudio.com ~ is giving a workshop for 8 individuals who like to learn new processes and enjoy learning about a lost and dying art. 

Also, for the individual who already likes to work with glass who wants to expand their learning.

This is a Traditional Method that dates to the Egyptian Era. 

There are not many places in the USA where you can learn this process. 

Most of them IF you can find a place, are on the West or East coast.  At a MUCH HIGHER fee!

At one time Mary was one of a handful, (like 10) qualified to be sought after for staining glass in this method.  Collected by Museums and has several panels of work in many churches throughout the country. 

Learning this process will open you up and enlighten your senses.  Even if you do not work in glass, or do not intend to ~this class will help immensely with Value. 

The project you finish, if you can not finish it on your own and do not want to learn how to, Mary can finish it out for you, into a box or a panel.

ALL the materials and kiln firings are provided in the fee.~ 3 FULL days $435

 

A thought for the frugal~ this comprehensive FULL workshop would cost a LOT more if tutored, or taking the class for 6 weeks.

In my experience, a workshop like this a person will learn the most because it flows all the way through, not stopping to get picked up again next time, retaining MORE!

 

ALL the lessons learned in ANY of the 4 classes will help in any art area.  Learn a NEW process.

If you work in say oils already~ take a pastel~class and become recharged and inspired.

You either found another way to express yourself, or what you learn in this class might help you in the oils.  All mediums feed off each other!

An Art Retreat is about MORE than Learning about Art

A retreat is more than about learning to paint.  While we are offering an opportunity to learn the process of painting or learning how to use a camera, to get a healthy dose of creative inspiration, you will come away with a lot more from the experience.

The process of painting isn't so much about producing artwork to sell. 
It is about not being afraid of the process.

The process has HUGE benefits. 
Just the motion, the letting go of your inhibitions to just put something on the paper, or in the camera, has calming properties.

Explore allows you to find different paths.

Different paths might take you to a new place for vacation.  Might help you find the right path to help your child or mate. 
Might bring you a healing peace.

Rest allows you to bring clarity to yourself.

Clarity helps you develop inner peace, or the avenue to project yourself further in your career. 

The process of art brings all this and more to the individual.

Speaking of Classes!

Chris has provided me with a rough outline of her plans for her class.

 

 

Her plan is to provide 3 separate days of different approaches for this Pastel medium. 

Take one day, two days, or combine everything and grasp a HUGE bang experience putting it all together for all 3 days.

 

Chris is a powerful instructor, and a master of Pastel painting.

 

I have been given instruction from her and she doesn't 'simply instruct'  she imparts knowledge.  Years of trials and happy outcomes. 

The products that are fabulous and the products to try at a later time.

 

I have had the pleasure to watch her paint. 

Just watching her paint is so mesmerizing AND instructional!

The skill!! that oozes from her so easily. 

Her confidence is infectious! 

Watching her demonstrations alone, are forth coming with heaps of technical application.

 

She shares so much throughout the demonstrations.

 

As I list her given outline, do not read the list and think, well I am already good with that much...perhaps...perhaps not.

 

Know this, Chris covers a LOT of area and products...the one day alone will bring you forward in your Pastel studies, if not just remind you of the materials out there that you may have wanted to try, and concur that perhaps you might not waste the monies on that particular product just now...and move forward to something different on your list.

Day 3- Putting it all together!  We will work on a painting or 3! using the new skills.

Empty...

 

This morning I removed the Valentines Day decorations from the front window. 
Now the glass is all empty. 
I am not much into getting into placing EVERY kind of holiday up in those windows...
I am NOT about holidays anyway. 

I am about expression.

Teaching others how to express themselves and perhaps learn to be creative.
Passing along the insights already expressed, with the abundance of wonderful artistic expression throughout the Gallery. 

Or by giving them personal instruction through the many class offerings.

It is not about the holidays but more about personal growth.

Sometimes I wish I had gone with my original plan to name the place "Stuff". 
I think that titling the place with "Gallery" scares the people.
They think everything in here is off limits expensive.
BUT
When they FINALLY do come through that door, they discover how affordable these artists have kept their prices.
Because...they realize this isn't New York City.
An actual comment...
"I tried and tried to NOT come in here...(sigh)....because I KNEW, I was going to LOVE this place..."

For One OF A Kind works,
not a replica that has most likely been ripped off from the originating source,
that then needs to be framed...

but finished, framed, and not a copy, not the same as the place around the corner, not a fad... an individual, personal, resonating that the creator helps to bring forth.

A unique YOU individual form of expression.

So the window is going to remain empty of holiday types of "advertising"...but stay FULL of the priceless fantabulous works from the originators, who are still alive!!! and hence, affordable.

Periodically, IF I am in the mood, I may 'decorate' the windows with some kind of message...maybe.

So come on by the Stagecoach Gallery...where dreams are wild..in the west.

I want to thank all the Artists who keep sending their amazing work. 
And the people who recognize them and adopt their pieces to go to their new "forever" homes.
And continue to want to learn...

A Heavy Cross..

The Cross installation is complete at Mount Funeral Home in Platte, SD

Jerod Meryerink fabricated the metal frame...and I really like how he treated the metal giving the art and craft flavor we were looking for in the overall effect.

Mark is going to add a couple more lights in the center to help illuminate the glass...nothing to stark

the reds pick up the light lovely the browns are a little heavier and are resisting the lights right now.

Mark plans to repaint this wall

when we began the project the cross was to hang ON the wall

a happy mistake decided the cross frame should be installed INTO the wall

so some emergency drywall adjustments have occurred and the blemishes haven't been erased yet..

this is a rather large cross 5ft x nearly 4ft...hefty iron metal unit as well

and they made the back the entrance to place the lights so no removing the glass unit each time a bulb dims...

Glass Cross Commission

Follow me, we are going to go through the bones of a commission for glass.




The project is for a Cross that will be the form of the cross
mounted to the wall with back lighting.



Going in the Mont Funeral Home in Platte SD...

The cross is measuring 54 inches long...about 20 inches across each side.





In the initial meeting the discussion of colors for the glass begins the project..along with where it will go. How to place it where it goes and something about what they want to see.

Using a light box and color samples we begin the process of what colors are liked

Really all I got out of them in my initial meeting were some color choices.
She likes 5 colors and wants them in the project. 5 is a bit many to work into a decent design, so this was obstacle number 1.

number 2 is they have no idea what kind of design they want.

So, I have 4 designs. Shown are 4 designs and color schemes that may work for them. With 1 done in full pattern size.

A really pretty jeweled toned plum takes center stage in the full sized pattern. Flowing around the center are the other colors of fall she would like represented. Red, Navy, 2 choices of brown a light neutral shade and deeper brown.
Done in a kind of mosaic fashion.
An alternate mosaic border would be the true smaller version with a mixture of the color roaming around the center plum
this might be a nice pattern too
I was too tired to draw that today and may draw it this way tomorrow
although it is as easy to explain when presenting the patterns in conversation...
so i might be lazy and not draw that alternative...

This would also be well represented if she chooses just 2 of the 4 as well.

I have lost the color pattern for this line drawing. The center is plum flanked with the deeper brown and the larger rectangles are blue

The furnishings they chose are mission in style so I thought that using Frank Lloyd Wright for my inspiration in designs might look nice for the cross...

Keep in mind the colors I have represented do not need to be placed as I have them, nor do all of them need to be used...
This gets decided in the next meeting with clients..
Somewhere has to begin the process of elimination and with out a few examples we can't decide what we might like better or not at all...

A new venue

Glass platter gently rippled. the design is "painted" using the old master's techniques of crushed glass fused in the kiln...then the piece is sagged in the kiln...happy dragonflies to cheer up any space!

This is IT...the second panel of the restoration project for the Hospital Chapel...YAY!!!

Monday I will deliver the two panels and they can begin their installation plans.
then I will go get a completed picture.

But,
For my part, I am DONE!!!!!!!!!

Probably my last restoration commission.

Restoration Update

These pictures might look the same but, there is different phases involved and I hope if you click on and enlarge the image you might see the difference.

The first picture shows all the pieces pulled apart from the old lead and most of the cement removed. There are 2 pieces i need to rummage through the extras pile to see if I can come up with a match.
This second picture shows the difference between cleaned pieces and then the grungy particle cement pieces...can you see the difference ?
On the bottom row look at the purple piece then the gold triangle and the next purple piece...you should see a difference in the shine versus no shine.

This shows the textured side and you can see the cement that has to be picked out of the grooves. The black pieces on the napkin is the cement that gets removed.

This picture is showing the panel from a different view with a close up of the peak..looking down the panel from the peak down the center there is an elongated triangle piece then the first small purple triangle. From the elongated triangle to the peak has yet been cleaned. I am moving along good even though it looks like I have a lot yet to do.

If you look at the peak pieces I would like you to notice how well the craftsman cut and then chipped away to curve the purple Fleur De Lea...he didn't have a motorized grinder like today to grind away that shape...he was a good craftsman!

The next update will show the panel ready to solder.

Restoration step 1

Step 1:

Trace with a piece of charcoal or soft pastel, over the lead lines of the panel that will be restored.

Next,

lay the tracing onto the work space and place grid paper over the tracing. The grid paper helps to true up the lines, make them straight and create the pattern that will be worked from.

Next, start pulling off the old lead, and clean up the piece of glass then lay in the respective place on the pattern.

Next update will show the glass cleaned and in place.

Long Term Project

The Avera Hospital here in Platte, SD just delivered these panels for restoration. The 2 panels on the table will be restored, using the parts from the panels on the floor. They are building a chapel in the hospital, where these units will be permanently displayed.

The first task is to make a working pattern from the best (most intact) of the two panels. Then I pull off the old lead. Which doesn't look like it will be a problem, it is literally falling apart. Then, I clean all the old cement off the glass parts and dig around in the spare parts for a piece to replace the broken and missing pieces.

Then, I reconstruct the units with new lead and cement. Reinforce and up to the chapel they go.
With out any major complications this should probably take 2 months.
Depending on my work and lesson planning with demonstrations to schedule working into studio time.
This is where the word of the year for me...."Balance" is going to come into play!

There isn't going to be much to show for progress reports...I will probably just re post these pictures with the finished results when the time comes.

Memory Box

The description to follow is for just one style of a memory box.

Well it seems this feature isn't working! sorry they won't enlarge.

Memory boxes are used for so many kinds of memories.
To hold the first rose...or tickets of that memorable date...a box with the family crest...or a bible box with any meaningful passage stained on the lid....or the ashes of a loved one.

This box houses the ashes of a loved one. [This is a sealed box]

My client is gifting her siblings with a box, made of 1 inch bevels and the solder is decorated ( a process that uses the heat of the iron to move the solder into a design) The final picture of the decorated solder doesn't show very well...so you will just have to see it in person.

Step one gather the materials and build the basic box.

Then everything gets cleaned up and the inside is acid washed. Then cleaned well again and the ashes are added.

I am getting the hang of this picture adding thing. This shows the tops sealed. (ashes receive a sealed box.) Boxes may also be made with a hinged top. Not this time.



Then the finished box decorated and polished. No picture I take shows the details well. This cube can be hung by the added loop. In a window or any space where you want to share your memory.

Memories deserve a special place to be kept. A beautiful glass box is a sparkly place to keep your special memory.

Cabinet Doors

FINALLY!!!

I had two whole days for studio time!

I finished these cabinet doors.

The inserts were fairly generic.

Clear center with a stamped falling leaf pattern obscured blur. The edges were bevels separated by green variegated glass. Pretty doors of oak. A good selection for a cabinet door it will show what you want behind the door yet you don't have to have perfect order. Here is a picture of the door being constructed...then the lady holding the panel up for me.

She tossed them into the back seat! shocked me!!! I would have thought a little more tenderness would be given.

I hope they made it home unscathed.

I did these pictures so that when you click on them or at the least the door itself, it will become large.

You can get a close up of the soldering...if it does notice that I use a brown patina..it is like an antiqued copper when it is polished up.

Pretty with oak.

Pheasant Retrieve

I am not sure I am in like of this piece. One thing I think this tail is too long

I might shorten it

if for no other reason..it won't get easily broken.

It is pretty self explanatory, Labrador retrieving a pheasant...in glass.

I don't have a way to hang it without moving panels so I did the best I could getting the picture over a light source...but it doesn't show the birds colors well.

Maybe a better picture will emerge...

I am sure everyone is fine with the one I have :)

One little bit of information that doesn't get transferred is the textured glass I used for the dog fur. This is a very cool piece of glass. The texture is a fine raised combing and the glass is really thick to allow for the texturing and gives the streaks a finer subtleness, like fur would be...

This for the Pheasants Forever Banquet order too.

Phes #2

I finished the second piece for Pheasants forever. this pheasant hangs in the window like a suncatcher. It is larger than a suncatcher and I call them freeforms.

I don't think they show up well but, he has feet jutting off the panel

this is laying on a small lightbox so you can see the color of the glass.

You can kind of see the glass colors better between looking at both the pictures
